Three days after the attack, I set out to photograph the Pentagon. The weather was miserable — pouring rain — but I figured it might actually keep the sightseers away. I loaded up all my gear and went.
The police had the entire area locked down. My first two attempts to get close were turned back. Eventually I found a side route through a wooded area just as a group of Marines was using the same shortcut. I followed them toward the press zone. With a full Nikon kit over my shoulder, nobody stopped me.
I ended up alongside AP photographers who were pooling shots. A few of the longer-range images in this gallery were taken using the AP's 600mm lens — they let me take a few frames. As I was leaving, I passed a prayer service being held by families of the victims.
